..From there, he reached Kalimpong and spent three months delivering speeches and building the organization. Politics prevented Dharma Ratna from speaking publicly. At that time, young men in Borasan were ready to work for the Praja Parishad, but there was a lack of monetary resources and people needed for such work. The required funds could not be gathered for those who did join. Dharma Ratna gave a disappointing reply to Beli Bahadur.

A century earlier, through various bloody incidents, the lineage of Baber Shamsher had seized the prime ministerial post and effectively eliminated the king's authority, turning the King of Nepal and the government into mere figureheads. However, King Tribhuvan, living under the tyranny of the Rana dynasty in the palace, could not tolerate this. He and his followers secretly harbored the desire to reclaim power. Despite spending a life under prolonged house arrest, King Tribhuvan retained a deep inner desire for freedom. The monthly allowance granted for the upkeep of his entire household was less than one lakh rupees. However, after the Praja Parishad decided to fight against the Rana autocracy and established contact with the King, financial aid began flowing from the palace. Political organizations often face financial shortages, especially those whose active sympathies lie primarily with the most oppressed people. However, receiving large sums of money can also create friction among cadre members and lead to internal organizational conflict. Eventually, a rift developed within the Praja Parishad, and financial aid from the King ceased.

About six months before this split, a plot against the Rana regime was uncovered inside the Royal Palace (Narayanhiti). The plan was to have the Senior Queen play the tabla and frequently report that she was gravely ill. Then, one day, claiming a sudden stroke or emergency, they would summon the Prime Minister, overpower him with an anesthetic or shoot him dead, and announce that King Tribhuvan had ascended the throne. However, in a palace crawling with the Prime Minister's spies, such a plot could hardly remain secret for six months. Prime Minister Juddha Shamsher learned of it immediately. Two hours later, the Prime Minister's eldest son, Bahadur Shamsher, arrived to confront and reprimand King Tribhuvan, placing him under strict internal restrictions.

Shortly after, Shukraraj Shastri organized the first public discourse on the Bhagavad Gita in Nepal's history, in which Gangalal also participated. Shastri was arrested for this act, and Gangalal was interrogated as well. However, Gangalal's father secured his release by securing a pardon. Gangalal felt deeply distressed by this repeated compromise. Around this time, Dharma Ratna arranged the marriage of his only younger brother. During a gathering organized on the occasion of this wedding, a national song in the Newari language ★ was performed. The song criticized weak-willed leaders. Gangalal heard this sharp satirical critique, stood up passionately, and expressed his feelings in verse:

"Leaders and followers alike, death is common to all.

I am a brave son of brave Nepal.............

......Ready to step onto the pyre for the nation."

People present were astonished. When the 22-year-old youth, Gangalal, walked out with a red, impassioned face, the musical gathering dispersed.

Five days after that musical gathering, a powerful pamphlet calling for the complete eradication of the Rana autocracy was released by the Dilli-Bazar group. Dharma Ratna had set up a soap shop using a significant portion of his capital. That shop became a hub for patriotic youth and students...

Survey on Early 20th-Century Nepalese Political Movements and Anti-Rana Resistance

Section 1: Historiography and Political Dynamics

  1. How do you evaluate the structural and strategic evolution of early anti-Rana organizations (such as the Praja Parishad) in bridging royal court factionalism with grassroots resistance?

  2. In what ways did the financial dependencies between royal patrons and underground political cadres shape the autonomy and internal stability of resistance groups during this period?

  3. How effectively do current historical frameworks account for the covert intelligence and surveillance apparatus employed by the Rana regime within the royal palace and urban centers?

Section 2: Cultural Resistance, Media, and Public Mobilization

  1. What role did non-monopolized commercial spaces (such as local storefronts or private enterprises) play as covert nodes for student activation and literature distribution?

  2. How did literary, musical, and vernacular expressions—particularly in Newari and non-establishment mediums—function as tools for clandestine political mobilization and public agitation?

  3. In evaluating the biographical accounts of figures like Gangalal Shrestha, Shukraraj Shastri, and Dharma Ratna Yami, how do you distinguish between individual ideological radicalization and collective organizational strategies?

Section 3: Archival Gaps and Methodological Challenges

  1. What are the primary methodological challenges in corroborating oral histories and personal memoirs of anti-Rana activists with official state records from the period?

  2. Which specific archival collections or underutilized primary sources do you believe require further scholarly attention to better understand the 1930s–1940s political movements in Nepal?
