Concerns about student fixation on computer science

The core alarming concern is of the trend of craze of enrolement in today's Nepal by the overwhelming focus of top engineering graduates on computer science and software jobs, at the expense of other critical disciplines.

The stated reasons for student fixation may be due to the pursuit of high starting salaries offered by software roles of outsourcing companies. These companies have their own survival issues in Nepal. The problem lies in the prevailing "mentality" prioritizing immediate financial gain by neglecting of critical fields. This singular focus draws talent away from "core disciplines" vital for Nepal's development and strategic independence. Specific sectors are suffering in talent gaps including civil services & Policymaking and other sectors crucial for self-reliance. This imbalance threatens the foundation of Nepal's developmental goals. The Scale of the imbalance should be made transparant by Misiter of Education. This vastly overshadows enrollments and graduations in other engineering disciplines

The Call to Action

People should be aware of such development and make fundamental mindset shift.puting the country first over the personal aspirations. Careers should be viewed as not just about getting a job, but about "building" the nation and its critical sectors. There should be policy to make engineering education accessible across socioeconomic backgrounds to ensure talent isn't limited by origin.

Summary

I am deeply concerned that the lure of high starting salaries in software jobs is causing a massive talent drain from engineering disciplines crucial for Nepal's strategic development and self-reliance. This imbalance threatens Nepal's  foundational goals. Students should be encouraged to prioritize national needs alongside personal aspirations, viewing their careers as an opportunity to build vital sectors, not just secure a high-paying job. A narrow focus on computer science, driven by high salaries and short-term thinking, is undermining the country’s strategic capabilities in critical fields. There should be a cultural and educational shift—from careerism to nation-building. The future of Nepal's  technological sovereignty depends on diversifying talent pipelines and redefining success beyond software paychecks.
