Heera Devi Yami (English)

Laxmi Krishna was a Kasa, or Kansakar, who followed the traditional handicraft of making copper and brass pots. He lived in a lane called Masangalli off the main street of Kel Tol in central Kathmandu. He had four sons – Laxmi Bir Singh, Heera Kaji, Ratna Man Singh and Moti Kaji. When the oldest son, Laxmi Bir Singh, grew up, he was sent to work at the Kothi or shop of his maternal uncle in Lhasa, where he had the usual experience of a Banja – great hardship.

His old residence area is called Khyo Keb a next to Shanteni Kunja school. From the top floor he used to call out all the neighbours ans display the flesh of pigs shouting” Look Look I have cooked the meat of pig. Look I am eating and it is very tasty. During those days touching pigs used to be banned hence eating pork used to be banned in the society. He used to promote pig meat in the society then. Now every one eats pig meat. Pigs used to be eaten by only untouchables those days.  While he was locked up in Nakhu Jail in Kathamandu in 1940s he used to order pork meet and we used to deliver.

Now Nepali society is transformed to some extent.  People are now fully aware of the importance of education. The discrimination between genders is decreasing. However, we should appreciate the brave resistance demonstrated by the teacher Heera Devi Yami and students like Ratneswari Shrestaha, and Laxmi Pravha Bajracharya during the suppression period of the Rana regime.

Heera Devi Yami is not only known as a wife of Dharma Ratna Yami she is popularly also known as the great dedicated brave women leader  of the nation. She was born in B. S. 1977. Her father was Heera Kaji Kansakar and mother Heera Maya Kansakar. Those days family from Bhansachhen used to be famous as popular business leader in Nepal.  People who travelled to Lhasa(Tibet) and Heera Devi was a daughter from that house. They had business centre and were financially sound and famous within UDAYA community.
